Counseling

Due to the Coronavirus and current safety risks,

all sessions are being held online via Zoom.

As a licensed marriage and family therapist I offer counseling for all ages, but specialize in working with children and teens, and have been a therapeutic counselor in k-12 schools since 2014.

My work with youth varies depending on what is needed and can involve any of the following:

  • Relationship building through conversation, games, and stories

  • Art and play exploration to help children understand and express their thoughts and feelings

  • Tools for stress reduction and emotional regulation

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) where we shift thoughts and associated beliefs and behaviors

  • Mindfulness teachings on meditation, movement, mindset, practice, and values

  • Communication skills development and ongoing practice

  • Confidence development as clients experience ongoing success in overcoming challenges as we face their fears together

  • Assisted practice to solidify the transfer of tools and skills from therapy, into clients' everyday lives

  • Perspective taking which can include learning to build empathy and appreciation around other's perspectives, and/or a deeper understanding that clients' own experiences are not necessarily individual incidents, but are shared by others

Areas of Focus

My work with clients includes, but is not limited to the following areas:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Trauma

  • Communication & Relationships

  • Bullying

  • Self-harm

  • Emotion Regulation & Anger Management

  • Grief & Loss

  • Parenting

  • Family Systems

  • Transitions & Life Changes

PLEASE NOTE

  • Since I am currently only seeing clients online, I can only take new clients who are a good match for online counseling. If we determine that you would benefit more from in person support, then I will provide other referrals.

  • Due to the law and ethics outlined by my licensing board, I can only take new counseling clients who reside in or near Santa Cruz County, California

  • I am only available for sessions between the hours of 11:30AM to 3:30PM

Session Length & Fees

  • Sessions are $120 for 50 minutes

  • Given that sessions are currently online, I also offer 40 minute sessions at $100 for younger children under 8 years, when appropriate.

  • I do not take insurance at this time

  • 24 hour cancellation is required for all appointments

Counseling vs Coaching?

Having trouble deciding whether you should do

therapeutic counseling versus parent coaching? Below are some distinctions that might help.

Parent Coaching

  • short term

  • focuses on techniques and solutions

  • teaches Positive Discipline concepts and tools

  • helps parents address challenges through brainstorming and problem solving

Counseling

  • can be longer term

  • focuses on addressing past experiences which can include the way you were parented

  • addresses deep-rooted patterns and potential changes needed in the family system

Still unsure? Call for a free 15 min. consultation and we can figure it out together! 831-920-3835

Daniel J. Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson didn't set out to explain why Positive Discipline (PD) is so effective, but that is ultimately the result of their book “The Whole-Brian Child”. Many of PD’s core concepts and approaches have worked with families already, but the science behind them gets further explained in how they ultimately promote brain integration.
